A child's play house will be raffled off to raise money for the Foothills Child Advocacy Center. Foothills is a non-profit that provides a safe haven for children who have fallen victim to abuse and assault.
With dozens of non-profits in the Charlottesville area, it's difficult to come up with new and exciting fundraisers.
“Instead of another golf tournament or something like that, I just thought a playhouse with children is just a good fit,” secretary/treasure of the board of the Foothills Child Advocacy Center, Jane Tirrell said.
Teaming up with the Charlottesville chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction, Foothills chose to build a play house to raffle off in the community.
“This has been a labor of love for us we've just really gotten into it,” vice president of the Charlottesville chapter of NAWIC, Connie Deatherage said. “We wanted to do a hands-on project like this.”
NAWIC members say for the last 3 to 4 months they’ve been pleased to see the project progress from the ground up.
”We chose a set of plans that were very detailed. One person is really good at picking out materials another is good at giving advice on roofing and things, so we've just combined all of our skills,” Deatherage said.
Several organizations have lent a helping hand by donating space and building materials.
“Anything we can do to help people who are possibly disadvantaged or helping people who are in the construction field is certainly something we're interested in hearing about,” Caitilin Mohr of the PVCC Construction Academy said.
The women say in addition to building the house, they’ve built bonds with each other. While the money still needs to be raised, they say the experience has been great.
“Everyone has grown so much though this experience, personally my skill level is so much better than it was before,” NAWIC member, Jessica Ammons said.
“We hope the community supports us because it's a great organization, and we need your support,” Tirrell said.
