Foothills Child Advocacy Center is seeking 100 organizations or adults to support services for 100 children annually each year by making a three-year pledge of $600 a year. These gifts can be designated as "use where most needed" or to build a fund in support our long-term goal of launching the Child Victim’s Health Access Program.
Increased Need for Services that Reduce Trauma, Promote Healing, and Keep Kids Safe
Foothills is seeing an unprecedented need for its services. For the last three years, the number of children who need our services has increased steadily and significantly. Since FY 2016, the number of children we serve annually has increased by 37 percent. This increase has resulted in the need to expand our facility and add staff. Your three-year pledge will help us to make sure that every child and family receives the needed services.
Child Victims Health Care Access Program
The cost of one child abuse forensic medical evaluation is estimated to be about $600, and we anticipate that 100 child victims will receive forensic medical evaluations each year when this program is launched. The need for this program is significant: in FY 2018, only 25 percent of the children who were alleged victims of abuse received medical exams. On April 1, 2018, Dr. Mark Mendelsohn began duties as Foothills' medical director and also provides forensic medical evaluations for child victims of physical abuse on site at Foothill's child-friendly facility. Dr. Mendelsohn and Foothills' longtime partners, the University of Virginia (UVA) Health Center Forensics Team and the UVA Department of Pediatrics, are working together to increase access to appropriate medical care for abused children.
